FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 17 northbound in Essex County will be reduced to a single lane for an estimated two weeks near the Route 681 (Spindle Shop Road) intersection in the Loretto area as crews complete a slope repair project.
Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) contractor crews will mobilize in the work zone on Monday, July 15. Repair work will be underway to stabilize a slope that supports Route 17.
VDOT has hired a contractor to use a soil nail installer to create a retaining wall to support Route 17. The soil nail installer will drill holes beneath the road and insert steel rods approximately 20 ft. long into the ground. The rods are covered with a mesh wire net and anchored with bolts. The entire surface is then covered with a concrete material.
The slope repair is anticipated to be complete in late July 2024.
