FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a major rehabilitation project on the Route 3/Route 14 westbound bridge over Burke Mill Stream in Mathews County next week.

Starting Monday, July 8, crews will begin work to improve the 76-year-old structure, located on Route 3/Route 14 westbound just west of Windsor Road.

As part of the $5.5 million project, crews will replace the bridge deck, beams, bridge railings, guardrails and asphalt. The project will also improve drainage, environmental controls and slopes near the structure.

During construction, the westbound travel lanes on Route 3/Route 14 will be closed at Windsor Road in late August. Westbound traffic will be shifted to use a single eastbound travel lane. Route 3/Route 14 eastbound will be open with one travel lane open in each direction. The dedicated left turn lane eastbound at the Route 3/Route 14 and Windsor Road intersection will be maintained.

The work zone traffic pattern will be in effect from late Aug. 2024 to fall 2025 to accelerate work.

Drivers should use the most convenient alternate route depending on their destination.

Signs will be posted along the recommended detour route. Left turns from Windsor Road to Route 14 eastbound will be prohibited during construction due to the bridge closure.

To reach Mathews, Route 3 travelers will be detoured to Route 198 and Route 602 (Burkes Pond Road) or drivers can turn right onto Route 14 westbound and proceed to the Route 602 intersection to make a U-turn until project completion.

Weather permitting, construction is expected to be complete by Nov. 2025.

Built in 1948, the bridge currently has a weight limit posting. Once construction is complete, the weight limit restriction will be removed and the service of this structure will be extended for another 50 years.

Updates will be posted online to the project page at VDOT.Virginia.Gov.
