FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Beginning Monday, June 24, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close a portion of Route 612 (Bestland Road/Lily Pond Road) at the bridge over Dragon Swamp for repairs and maintenance work.
The bridge, which is located at the King and Queen and Essex county line, will remain closed to traffic until the evening of Wednesday, June 26, while crews make repairs to the bridge as recommended by a recent safety inspection.
During the closure, the recommended detour is approximately 8.6 miles using the following routes:
- Route 607 (Jones Bridge Road/Princes Road)
- Route 617 (Providence Road)
Message boards will be posted ahead of time to notify motorists about the upcoming closure.
The original structure over Dragon Swamp was built in 1972 and underwent a superstructure replacement in July 2014.
A recent VDOT traffic count indicates that approximately 55 vehicles use the bridge each day.
Work is expected to be complete and the road reopened to traffic by 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 26.
