FREDERICKSBURG – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will begin a safety project in the Northern Neck region next week to slightly widen road shoulders on several primary routes to reduce the risk of crashes.

Travelers can expect mobile lane closures and one-way, alternating traffic in these upcoming work zones. Work hours will vary based on location. Updated work schedules will be shared in the weekly traffic alert, which is posted on Friday afternoons to the VDOT News page.

All routes will be complete by late November 2025.

Starting Monday, Sept. 15, crews will begin work on nearly a 2-mile section of Route 3 (History Land Highway) in Richmond County between Creekview Lane and Boswell Road.

Work will be performed at the locations listed below in the following order as scheduled by the contractor:

Richmond County

Route 3 (History Land Highway) between Creekview Lane and Boswell Road

Lancaster County

Route 3 (Mary Ball Road) between Courthouse Road and Hickory Hill Lane

Westmoreland County

Route 3 (Kings Highway) between the King George County line and Oak Grove Road

Route 202 (Cople Highway) between Route 3 and the Nomini Bridge

King George County

Route 205 (Ridge Road) between Route 3 and Route 301

Shoulder widening provides more recovery space for drivers if their vehicle strays from the travel lane. The project is intended to reduce the risk of crashes and injuries that can result from vehicles running off the road.

The safety project involves widening along the existing footprint of the road shoulders to install 2-foot paved shoulders. Crews will also install shoulder rumble strips, 6-inch edge line pavement markings and relocate existing signs as required.

This project is a partnership between VDOT and the four localities.

The contractor is Lee Hy Construction.
