Stratford, VA (May 12, 2025) — Stratford Hall Historic Preserve is delighted to announce it is the recipient of two awards during National Preservation Month this May. The first award is a $10,000 Historic Preservation Grant to complete the replacement of the Historic Stables roof made possible through the sponsorship of the Thomas Lee Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR). In addition, Stratford Hall has been named one of the Best Historic Sites in Virginia Living’s Best of Virginia 2025 survey.

In 2024, Stratford Hall embarked on a project to replace the roofs of their Historic Stables, Gristmill, and Council House in advance of the nation’s Semiquincentennial in 2026. The Historic Preservation Grant awarded through the sponsorship of the Thomas Lee Chapter, NSDAR completes the funds needed for the Historic Stables roof replacement. The Historic Stables includes a section of the original stables constructed following the circa 1738 Great House. On exhibit in the stables are two of the carriages the Marquis de Lafayette, a friend of the Lees, rode in during his 1824-1825 tour of America. Stratford Hall’s Vice President of Advancement, Laura Fortsch, shared “by restoring the roofs of this historic building, collection items integral to the story of America are also being conserved and exhibited. We are incredibly grateful to the Thomas Lee Chapter out of Fairfax, Virginia for their dedication to preserving our history and for their sponsorship of this grant.”

Also announced this month, Stratford Hall has been named one of the Best Historic Sites in Eastern Virginia by readers of Virginia Living. President Karen Daly commented “It is an honor to be recognized by the readers of Virginia Living. Many thanks for voting Stratford Hall, the historic home of the Lee family, one of the best in Virginia!”

These announcements come as Stratford Hall celebrates National Preservation Month with a pop-up Architectural Fragment Collection exhibit and preservation projects taking place throughout the site. To learn more about Stratford Hall, including upcoming events, visit www.StratfordHall.org.
