FREDERICKSBURG – Starting Monday, Oct. 28, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will shift all Route 3/14 traffic in Mathews County to cross the eastbound bridge over Burke Mill Stream to allow construction to continue to improve the westbound bridge.

In July, the $5.5 million rehabilitation project began to replace the westbound bridge deck, beams, bridge railings, guardrails and asphalt. The project will also improve drainage, environmental controls and slopes near the 76-year-old structure, which is located at the Mathews and Gloucester line.

On Monday, Oct. 28, the westbound Route 3/14 travel lanes will close at Windsor Road. All Route 3/14 traffic will cross the eastbound bridge over Burke Mill Stream, with one lane open in each direction.

Left turns from Windsor Road to Route 14 eastbound will continue to be prohibited through fall 2025.

Drivers should use the most convenient alternate route depending on their destination.

Message boards are posted to alert drivers to the new traffic pattern.

Weather permitting, construction is expected to be complete by Nov. 2025.

Updates will be posted online to the project page at VDOT.Virginia.Gov.
