Apoll from the University of Mary Washington forecasts a highly competitive Virginia race for governor next year, whether Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-7th, faces Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears or Attorney General Jason Miyares as the GOP nominee.
Earle-Sears and Spanberger each received 39% of the vote in the survey of 1,000 adults which Research America Inc. conducted Sept. 3 to Sept. 9. In a prospective contest with Miyares, Spanberger received 40% of the support to 39% for Miyares, also well within the survey’s margin of error.
Either Earle-Sears, who announced her candidacy Sept. 4, or Spanberger, who kicked off her candidacy in November, would be the state’s first female governor. Earle-Sears would be the first Black woman to serve as governor of any state.
