FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) will close Route 614 (Rock Spring Road) in King and Queen County on Monday, Feb. 3, to accomplish a culvert repair and a bridge replacement project.

Travelers can expect Rock Spring Road to remain closed through December 2025 with a posted detour.

The culvert repair will be underway first and will take approximately two weeks to complete. Rock Spring Road will be closed near Route 616 (Liberty Hall Road) during the culvert repair. Crews will install a new culvert with a 48-inch diameter and pour new concrete end walls.

Then, separate crews will mobilize at the Rock Spring Road bridge over Exol Swamp for a construction project to replace the existing bridge. Crews will close Rock Spring Road at Exol Swamp on Thursday, Feb. 13, and the road will remain closed to through traffic at this location.

The replacement bridge will be built on the existing bridge alignment but will be 74 feet long and 27 feet wide. The travel lanes on the new bridge will be approximately 11 feet wide, with 1.5-foot shoulders. The existing structure was built in 1965 and is approximately 51 feet long and 24 feet wide. The new bridge will be open to vehicles of all legal weights. The current bridge is posted with a vehicle weight limit of 15 tons for all vehicles.

During both projects, through traffic will be detoured approximately 12 miles using the following routes:

Route 614 (Rock Spring Road)
Route 616 (Liberty Hall Road)
Route 610 (Spring Garden Road)
Route 615 (Union Hope Road)
Route 614 (Rock Spring Road)

An average of 130 vehicles a day travel on Rock Spring Road. Local traffic with destinations on Rock Spring Road will be able to reach driveway entrances throughout both projects.
