The Virginia Department of Education is caught between Washington and Richmond after the federal government sent a directive to cut diversity, equity and inclusion programs — an order that, if followed, would appear to put the state in violation of its own laws.
A law that state lawmakers passed in 2021 and then-Gov. Ralph Northam signed requires anyone seeking a teaching license to complete “cultural competency” training.
