As if road tolls weren’t unpopular enough, now the Virginia Department of Transportation is warning drivers to be aware of scammers impersonating toll collectors seeking unwarranted payment via text message.
Thousands of Virginians regularly use the electronically tolled lanes on Interstate 95, among other interstate highways in the state.
At this point there are no known smishing cases in Virginia, VDOT said.
Smishing is a scam in which a fake text is sent in an effort to get a potential victim to provide personal information or click on links that download malware.
