COVID-19 infection cases doubled from the beginning of June to the beginning of July, according to new data from the Virginia Department of Health. A state COVID-19 expert said this increase is likely due to the abnormally hot weather, lower vaccination rates and a new variant family known as FLiRT.

On June 8, the confirmed cases of infection totaled 638 and on July 6 reached 1,247. These numbers are still lower than last December, when 5,600 cases were reported statewide.
