Virginia could be on track to join 14 other states in requiring a license to purchase firearms, legislators say.

Virginia currently requires background checks before a person can buy a gun and bars some people — those convicted of felonies or who have been committed to a mental hospital, for instance — from owning firearms.

But unlike legislators in states ranging from deep blue Massachusetts to bright red Nebraska, Virginia’s General Assembly has so far balked at the idea of licensing people before they can buy guns.
