Roughly one of every 40 Virginians who cast ballots in November’s election did so the same day they registered to vote, a huge increase in what’s still a relatively new expansion of the ability to vote, state election officials say.
Same-day registration put a major strain on the system, even with legislation that gave local electoral boards three more days to process the provisional ballots that people who registered the same day they vote must use, the report said.
