Virginia will soon be one of only six states with mandatory exit exams for high school graduation, following decisions in Massachusetts and New York this month to remove the requirement.
Critics of high school exit exams argue that these tests fail to accurately reflect student learning; disproportionately disadvantage students of color, English learners and those with disabilities; and prioritize rote memorization over genuine understanding of academic concepts.
