Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Monday (July 1, 2024) at approximately 4:03 p.m. in the 500 block of South Water Lane in Essex County.
A 2003 Ford Explorer was traveling northbound on South Water Lane, near the intersection with Earl Street, when it crossed the center line, went off the left side of the road, struck a curb, and then a pedestrian.
The pedestrian, Diane P. Keane, 80, of Tappahannock, Va. died at the scene.
The driver of the Explorer, Michelle A. King, 59, of Richmond County, was charged with DUI- Manslaughter, Driving while Intoxicated/Drugs, Reckless Driving, and Obstruction.
King is being held at the Middle Peninsula Regional Security Center in Saulda.
