Virginia’s unemployment rate ticked up to 3.2% last month, an increase of nearly half a percentage point from a year earlier, and a Volvo truck factory in Southwest Virginia just announced a second round of layoffs amid rising uncertainty over tariffs that President Donald Trump has imposed, particularly on trade with China.

On the other hand, the number of non-farm jobs in Virginia increased in March and unemployment claims have not risen dramatically, despite deep cuts in the federal workforce and private contractors that support government agencies.
