Gov. Glenn Youngkin declared an emergency on Thursday to allow the state to pay for food assistance to low-income Virginians if federal funding of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program lapses next month because of the ongoing government shutdown.

Youngkin took sharp aim at Democrats in Congress, particularly Virginia Sens. Mark Warner and Sen. Tim Kaine, for continuing to vote against the stopgap funding resolution that the House of Representatives adopted last month on a party-line vote, prompting a shutdown that’s now in its fourth week.
