More than 3½ years since the COVID-19 pandemic began, nearly 45,000 Virginians are still waiting for their appeals to be heard on claims for unemployment insurance during the public health emergency.
Chief Deputy Commissioner Jeff Ryan acknowledged federal labor statistics through Sept. 30 that show Virginians with an average wait of 516 days — or about 17 months — to have their appeals heard, the third-longest wait in the country behind Nevada and Alabama.
