FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Beginning the evening of Monday, May 6, weather permitting, a new temporary traffic pattern will be in place as construction continues on a Virginia Department of Transportation project to improve safety at the intersection of Route 17 and Route 216 (Guinea Road) in Gloucester County.
During phase one of the project, which began in early March, crews constructed new curb, gutter, and sidewalk.
Phase two will begin Monday, and will take approximately two months to complete. Crews will remove the existing median along Guinea Road and build a new median and pedestrian island. Crews will also extend drainage facilities and repave the road in the project work zone.
Motorists will encounter the following traffic pattern changes starting Monday through the project completion in July 2024:
- On Route 17 southbound, one of the dual left turn lanes onto Guinea Road will be closed
- Westbound Route 216 (Guinea Road) at the Route 17 intersection will be reduced to a single lane for traffic turning left, right, or traveling through to Hook Road.
Single lane closures are possible on Route 17 at the following times in the work zone:
- Route 17 northbound, 8 p.m. – 11 a.m.
- Route 17 southbound, 7 p.m. – 5 a.m.
Motorists are encouraged to use Tidemill Road as an alternate route.
