The ACLU of Virginia has filed a lawsuit on behalf of a transgender middle school athlete who has been barred from playing sports in Hanover County Public Schools.
The student in question, 11, identifies as female after being born male. She successfully made the tennis team in August 2023. The School Board later voted unanimously against her participation on the team “due to her gender identity,” the suit alleges.
