Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-7th, has a big head start on Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney in the 2025 contest for governor, largely because many Virginians are not yet familiar with Stoney, 17 months ahead of the Democratic primary.

Spanberger leads Stoney 52% to 8% among Democrats in the poll that Christopher Newport University released Wednesday, with 40% unsure who they would support.

The Republican nominee is likely to be either Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears or Attorney General Jason Miyares, neither of whom has announced a bid.
