FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – Route 628 (Spring Cottage Road) in King and Queen County will be closed to through traffic for a pipe replacement project starting Monday, July 15, and will remain closed through Friday, Aug. 2, 2024.

Spring Cottage Road will close approximately 1,200 feet south of the intersection with Route 625 (Poplar Hill Road).

Motorists will be guided by signs placed along the recommended detour route, which is around 9.2 miles:

  • Route 639 (Eastern View Road)
  • Route 721 (Newton Road)
  • Route 625 (Poplar View Road)

Spring Cottage Road carries an average of 60 vehicles a day in the work zone location. Message boards have been placed on key routes near the work zone to notify travelers of the upcoming road closure.

VDOT crews will remove two 36-inch-diameter corrugated metal drainage pipes that have deteriorated underneath Spring Cottage Road, and will replace them with two 48-inch-diameter double-walled plastic pipes with concrete headwalls. VDOT has prioritized the replacement of these drainage pipes to occur ahead of road resurfacing scheduled for this section of Spring Cottage Road in 2025.

The project cost is approximately $150,000 and is funded through the state maintenance budget.

Work has been scheduled to occur weather permitting. Motorists can find updated traffic and lane closure information for work zones, crashes, and other incidents on 511Virginia.
