Rappahannock Community College’s Rappahannock Institute for Lifelong Learning (RILL) is pleased to have former faculty member Joseph Swonk teach “Survey of American Literature,” in November.
The course will read and discuss various works from major American authors spanning 1600s to the 20th Century. In addition to studying the literature, participants will examine the influence of notable figures such as Sigmund Freud and Charles Darwin had on American authors and culture. Some historical misinformation will be revealed with the truth provided.
Authors will be chosen from each time period, including the Puritans, Thomas Jefferson, Edgar Allen Poe, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, and others. Reading materials will be supplied.
The course will be held on Monday, November 4, 11, 18, and 25 from 1 pm to 3 pm at RCC’s Warsaw campus. Preregistration is required and costs $45.
Joseph Swonk holds a degree in English from Western Michigan University and completed doctoral at Florida State University. He taught composition and American Literature for 48 years, including at Rappahannock Community College and Germanna, among others.
