The U.S. Department of Justice is suing Virginia to challenge a state effort to remove ineligible voters from election rolls that federal officials say comes too close to the Nov. 5 election.

The lawsuit against the state, the State Board of Elections and Virginia Commissioner of Elections Susan Beals, filed in U.S. District Court in Alexandria, alleges that the program violates the National Voter Registration Act of 1993.

Gov. Glenn Youngkin fired back, calling the lawsuit by “the Biden-Harris Department of Justice” a “desperate attempt to attack the legitimacy of the elections” in Virginia.
