Former Gov. Doug Wilder is warning Virginia Democrats not to make the same mistake in next year’s gubernatorial election that they made in 2021, when he said lack of unity behind former Gov. Terry McAuliffe helped to elect Republican newcomer Glenn Youngkin as governor.

Wilder, who was perhaps the most prominent vocal critic of McAuliffe’s nomination over three younger Black challengers in 2021, said Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-7th, must do more to convince all parts of the Democratic coalition that she has the record and vision to serve as governor.
