FREDERICKSBURG – Route 3 travelers can expect overnight delays crossing the Robert O. Norris Bridge between Lancaster and Middlesex counties this week with one-way, alternating traffic for a maintenance project.
Starting Thursday, July 24 through Saturday, July 26, a portion of the Route 3 bridge over the Rappahannock River will be reduced to a single travel lane between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., and on Friday night through Saturday morning between 7 p.m. and 9 a.m.
Automated flagging devices will direct traffic through the work zone. Flagging crew members operate the devices, which can be adjusted to respond to congestion or incidents on the bridge.
Construction is advancing on a $7.1 million maintenance project to replace or strengthen portions of the bridge structural steel. The project will help to maintain the Norris Bridge as preliminary engineering work progresses on a separate bridge replacement project. The nearly two-mile bridge remains safe for travelers with its current 45-ton weight limit posting.
Weather permitting, all structural steel repairs are expected to be complete by September 2026. Click here for the maintenance project page.
Updates on this work zone are available on 511Virginia. Travelers can also download the free mobile 511Virginia app, or call 511 from any phone in Virginia.
