Stratford, Virginia (December 8, 2025) – Stratford Hall Historic Preserve is honored to announce that Dr. Edward G. Lengel will deliver the 2026 Lee Lecture on Sunday, January 18 at 2 p.m., titled “The Road Home: Light-Horse Harry Lee’s Return from the Revolutionary War.” In advance of a forthcoming book on Henry Lee III, Lengel will help attendees to understand the challenges “Light-Horse” Harry Lee faced in his personal life, business, and the young country’s political landscape in the 1780s and 1790s. The lecture will be held in the Stratford Hall Council House with an admission fee of $10, featuring a $5 discount for Friends of Stratford members and a virtual admission option available to any registrant. Edward G. Lengel is an award-winning historian and educator. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Virginia, where he directed the Washington Papers Project for many years, and subsequently worked in senior positions in the public history field. Also a professional author, speaker and battlefield tour guide, Lengel has written fourteen books on American history. These include the official history of Colonial Williamsburg; General George Washington: A Military Life; To Conquer Hell: The Meuse-Argonne, 1918; and Never in Finer Company: The Men of the Great War’s Lost Battalion. Lengel is a co-recipient of the National Humanities Medal and has won two writing awards from the Army Historical Foundation. He makes frequent television and radio appearances.
First-time and returning visitors of Stratford Hall are also invited to tour the Great House and Grounds the day prior, on Saturday, January 17, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The historic site will be offering a discounted admission fee of $5 (free for children 5 and under) for the Band of Brothers: The Lee Men of Stratford Hall self-guided audio tour. Advance tickets can be purchased online at StratfordHall.org/Events. Pre-registration is not required and tickets can be purchased in the Visitor Center.
