FREDERICKSBURG – Route 614 (Etna Mills Road) in King William County reopened to through traffic on Monday, Dec. 22, following a project to install concrete barrier at Hornquarter Creek.

Traffic had been detoured since the road closed on Wednesday, Nov. 5.

During Jan. 2026, crews will return to install a bridge rail and guardrail at the new barriers. The bridge rail and guardrail can be installed by Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews using single lane closures, and the road will remain open during this work.

Due to the presence of several drainage pipes at Hornquarter Creek where the guardrail is to be installed, several preliminary steps were required to prepare the location. First, trees were trimmed in the work zone. Next, a crane was used to drive piles to stabilize the foundation for the barrier. VDOT crews then installed concrete barrier during November and December to securely anchor the future bridge rail and guardrail in place.

An average of 1,065 vehicles a day travel on Etna Mills Road.
