FREDERICKSBURG – Construction to replace a dock maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) at Jones Creek Landing at the end of Route 638 (Jones Creek Road) in Richmond County will begin in July 2026.
Construction had previously been announced to start in winter 2026, with a planned dock opening in spring 2026. However, due to additional time needed to design the dock, construction will begin in early July, and the dock will reopen for public use in late September 2026, weather permitting.
Crews will begin mobilizing equipment and materials near the dock in mid-June.
The new dock will be similar in size to the existing dock. A kayak launch will be added to the replacement dock on the downstream side.
The estimated cost for the replacement dock is $300,000, funded through state bridge maintenance funds. VDOT state forces will build the new dock.
The existing dock was built in 1932. It closed on July 18, 2023, after an underwater inspection determined it needed to be closed for public safety until a replacement dock could be built. Crews placed closure signs and fencing to prevent pedestrians from using the dock and these will remain in place until the new dock opens.
