Gov. Abigail Davis Spanberger embraced her place in history Saturday, taking the oath as Virginia’s first female governor while calling on the resolve of her predecessors to confront the challenges facing the state in a politically divided country.
Minutes before her own inauguration, former state Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, of Chesterfield County, took the oath of office from Supreme Court Justice Cleo Powell to become the first Muslim and Indian to hold statewide office in Virginia, and former Del. Jay Jones, of Norfolk, was sworn in as the state’s first Black attorney general.
