RICHMOND – The Virginia State Police (VSP) is experiencing a powerful surge in recruitment momentum in 2026, highlighted by 212 applications received in March—the highest number of monthly applications the Department has seen in nearly 10 years.
This milestone is part of a broader trend: every month in 2026 has exceeded VSP’s monthly goal. This consistent upward trajectory marks a meaningful turning point for the agency as it works to sustain and strengthen its statewide operations.
VSP’s momentum follows several strategic investments in recruitment, including enhanced digital marketing, an upgraded and modernized www.vatrooper.com, expanded recruiter engagement, and department-wide involvement in attracting, identifying, and attracting new applicants.
“We are encouraged by the strong interest in serving with the Virginia State Police and the commitment to protecting the Commonwealth,” said Colonel Jeffrey S. Katz, Superintendent. “There are meaningful opportunities for individuals who are driven, selfless, and committed to advancing community safety while safeguarding civil liberties. This is demanding and purposeful work. It is not for everyone, but for those who feel called to it, VSP offers a wide range of paths to serve and make a difference.”
The rising demand is reflected not only in application numbers, but also in the strength of VSP’s training pipeline. The 145th Basic Session currently includes 50 trooper-trainees, and the upcoming 146th Session, beginning June 25, 2026, is expected to welcome more than 80 trainees. Earlier this year, 94 new troopers graduated from the 144th Basic Session.
As VSP continues to exceed recruitment goals month after month, it is steadily building the workforce necessary to support its mission and ensure strong, reliable law enforcement service across the Commonwealth.
VSP attributes this sustained momentum to several strategic recruitment investments, including:
- Enhanced digital marketing that connects more effectively with prospective troopers
- High-touch recruiter engagement to support applicants throughout the process
• A modernized www.vatrooper.com, redesigned to better tell the VSP story and highlight diverse, professional career opportunities - Agency-wide mobilization, tapping sworn and civilian personnel alike to expand VSP’s recruiting reach across Virginia communities
As the Commonwealth continues to rely on a modern, well-supported statewide force, VSP’s recruitment momentum positions the agency to remain mission-ready to protect the public and promote safety for years to come.
