FREDERICKSBURG – Route 607 (Cheaneys Bridge Road) in Essex County is now open after the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and its contractor completed a bridge replacement project.

In May 2025, Cheaneys Bridge Road closed between Howerton Road and Bestland Road for construction.

Earlier today, crews lifted the six-mile detour after building a new, longer and wider structure over Dragon Run Creek ahead of schedule.

The new bridge nearly doubles the length of the old structure at 65 feet long, that’s the same length as two school buses. It’s slightly wider with paved shoulders.

The weight limit restriction has been removed to allow all travelers of legal weights to cross over Dragon Run Creek.

The contractor, Abernathy Construction, based out of Glen Allen, finished the $3.3 million project before the expected completion date next month.

A recent VDOT traffic count indicates that approximately 110 vehicles used the bridge before the road closure last year.
