A public notice that Amazon wants a permit to draw groundwater has alarmed King George County’s water utility and angered the county’s state senator, Richard Stuart. Amazon has asked the state Department of Environment Quality for permission to draw up to 6.4 million gallons a year for a data center campus it wants to build on the site of a shuttered power plant. The public notice of Amazon’s permit request came 10 days before DEQ told the county it was rejecting its request for permission to draw 3.25 million more gallons of water from the same aquifer for its Fairview Beach/Potomac Landing well, to supply new housing and a hoped-for medical facility.
