The July derailment of a CSX train that sent three train cars into the James River was caused by “heat-induced track misalignment.”
The rail has since been adjusted to correct the condition.
Heat-induced track misalignments — often called sun kinks — occur when train tracks warp or buckle under extreme heat conditions. The derailment, which occurred July 3 on the bridge at the intersection of Dock and 20th streets, came amid a week of sustained temperatures in the upper 90s or even triple digits.
