The water company that serves Hopewell and Prince George County has agreed to trim a double-digit percent rise in rates in a proposed settlement that would still mean a 21.5% increase in a typical residential Virginia American Water bill for water and a 16.7% increase for sewer service.

The settlement, which is subject to approval by the State Corporation Commission, would give customers a rebate from interim rates, based on its original request, that the company began charging last month.
