Virginia lawmakers will face new demands on the state budget and policy as a sweeping federal tax-cut package adopted last year makes it harder for needy Virginians to get health care and food assistance through the public safety net.
Secretary of Health and Human Resources Marvin Figueroa told legislators Wednesday that the so-called “One Big Beautiful Bill” that President Donald Trump signed into law more than a year ago was designed to save the federal government money by reducing eligibility for healthcare coverage under Medicaid and food assistance under the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
