Back in February of this year King William County Sheriff J. S. “Jeff” Walton announced that he would not seek re-election. Jeff started off as a dispatcher before he was elected sheriff in 1999. He won six elections in the county.

On Tuesday there were 4 seeking the position on being the new sheriff in town.

In a close race T. D. “Don” Lumpkin, Jr. is the new sheriff with 2,047 votes or 33 percent. Second was G. Scott Hamilton with 29 percent or 1815 votes. Third was J. R. “Robbie” Nester, Jr. with 1770 votes or 28 percent.

Sheriff Walton had no immediate plans after he retires but more time will be devoted to children and grandchildren.
