President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are endorsing nearly two dozen Democratic candidates in Virginia’s General Assembly elections this year.

While it’s not unusual for presidents to offer support to candidates in state contests, it’s usually candidates for governor or Congress rather than for the legislature.

Of the 23 candidates Biden and Harris endorsed, a handful are in competitive contests that could determine control of Virginia’s House or Senate. During this year’s legislative session, Republicans held a four-seat edge in the House, and Democrats held a four-seat edge in the Senate.
