Chesapeake Bay blue crab numbers are up sharply, though they remain below the long-term average, while the number of female crabs — vital for the future — fell and approached the level that signals overfishing.
The annual winter dredge survey estimated there are a total of 349 million crabs in the bay this year, a 46% increase from last year.
