The family of Adam Oakes, his fraternity and 11 of its former student members have settled a wrongful death lawsuit nearly four years after the Virginia Commonwealth University freshman died in a hazing incident.

Delta Chi Fraternity Inc. and other defendants will pay a total of $4.2 million, mostly through their insurance carriers, to the Oakes family, their lawyers and the Oakes family’s foundation, according to a court filing. A Richmond Circuit Court judge approved the settlement in October.
