A significant financial gulf has developed in both of Virginia’s down-ticket statewide races with four months until Election Day.

Sen. Ghazala Hashmi, D-Chesterfield, the Democratic nominee for lieutenant governor, holds more than eight times the cash on hand as her Republican rival, John Reid, while Jason Miyares, the GOP incumbent for attorney general, is sitting on nearly six times the war chest of his Democratic challenger, former Del. Jay Jones, D-Norfolk.

Lieutenant governor’s race

During the latest reporting period, lasting from June 6 to June 30, Hashmi raised $1.7 million and had $1.3 million cash on hand at the end of the month, according to numbers from the Virginia Public Access Project. Her Republican opponent Reid, a longtime Richmond radio host, raised $128,934 in the same period and reported $163,082 cash on hand.

Hashmi received a $1 million donation from the national Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association — the largest donation ever received by a lieutenant governor nominee in the state, the group says.
