Kings Dominion has received the go-ahead from Hanover County to begin construction on a new roller coaster that could be the theme park’s biggest project in more than a decade.

The park is planning a large roller coaster to open next year where Volcano: The Blast Coaster used to stand.

Last week, Kings Dominion’s former parent company, Cedar Fair LP, completed its merger with Six Flags Entertainment Corp. Kings Dominion will keep its name, but the combined company will operate under the Six Flags moniker.

A park spokesperson said no changes are expected in 2024. Kings Dominion turns 50 years old in 2025.
