The head of Virginia’s prison system says the agency is in good shape, with good news in the form of a drop in overdoses in state facilities.
Director Chadwick Dotson said prison safety was a key objective when he took charge of Virginia’s prison system last fall. Dotson also discussed the contentious issue of medical care in prisons, and the political livewire of commuting prison sentences for good behavior.
Dotson was appointed to run Virginia prisons in September 2023.
