The formal nomination of a new federal prosecutor for Virginia has been caught in the gears of Washington politics.

Last week, Democrats blocked the nomination of 10 U.S. attorneys on the Senate floor. Among them was Erik Siebert, who has run the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia on a temporary basis since January, when his former boss, Jess Aber, resigned to make way for a President Trump appointee.

The move drew derision from Republicans on the Senate Judiciary Committee, who say stalling will affect public safety.
