FREDERICKSBURG – Postpone travel until midday to allow temperatures to rise and road conditions to improve. Icy road conditions are present in the Fredericksburg area, Northern Neck, and Middle Peninsula following sleet overnight, and many low-volume secondary roads remain covered by snow. Today, Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) crews will seek to further improve conditions on primary roads and high-volume secondary roads. Loaders and other heavy equipment will help snowplows remove snow and ice from turn lanes, intersections, shoulders, and crossovers. Overnight, crews have been applying a mix of sand and salt to assist with snow removal and to promote traction. Staying off the road will provide space for crews to maneuver and restore capacity on these major routes. VDOT’s first plowing priorities are interstates and primary roads, and secondary roads that carry heavy traffic volumes or connect with public facilities and emergency services. After crews make further progress Monday plowing primary and high-volume secondary routes, resources can next be shifted to concentrate on plowing low-volume secondary roads in residential areas. Crews are working 24 hours a day, at the district’s highest mobilization level, and will not stop until plowing every state-maintained road following this weekend’s winter storm.
