Dr. Babur Lateef, an eye surgeon and the chairman of the Prince William County School Board, has announced a 2025 bid for lieutenant governor, saying school boards are “the front lines of democracy.”

Lateef, a Democrat, has led the school board in Prince William since 2018.

The 2025 Republican nominee for governor is widely expected to be Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears or Attorney General Jason Miyares, but neither has announced plans for a campaign next year.

Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-7th and Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney have announced runs for the Democratic nomination for governor.
