Federal authorities have charged a Richmond doctor with 26 counts of health care fraud, saying he used unapproved ozone gas treatments and billed the government for reimbursement.

Authorities say Dr. Jawad Bhatti, a pain-management specialist, fraudulently billed Medicare and Medicaid for $5.2 million for these and other treatments. Patients who received ozone injections reported experiencing extreme pain.
