A number of law enforcement agencies in Virginia are violating state law regarding automatic license plate readers, the now-prolific camera systems that constantly monitor vehicle traffic.

That’s according to a report published in January by the Virginia State Crime Commission, which lawmakers asked to provide frequent updates on the use of the camera systems by Virginia police and sheriffs.

Virginia enacted strict guidelines around the use of automatic license plate readers in the 2025 session of the General Assembly, with the rules taking effect last July.
