The U.S. Department of Transportation is granting more than $1.7 billion to speed and expand passenger rail service between Washington, Richmond and Raleigh, North Carolina, say senators and members of Congress from Virginia and North Carolina.
A day after granting the first contracts to build a new bridge across the Potomac River for passenger rail, Virginia announced it had received a $729 million grant from the federal government to help pay for the $2.3 billion project.
