The passenger lines generally aren’t long at Richmond International Airport, and no ICE agents are patrolling the baggage claim. However, federal transportation security workers say Virginia travelers shouldn’t be fooled into thinking the airport has been spared from the turmoil that has engulfed the nation’s airports during a government funding shutdown that reached its 39th day Tuesday.

Rep. Rob Wittman, R-1st, visited TSA officers at the airport during the first, 43-day shutdown last fall — as McClellan also did. On Thursday, he deplored the loss of employee paychecks in a second “unnecessary government shutdown.”
